LIFE magazine portraits of literary boozers and druggies

 Xc 2660703

Our friends at LIFE magazine posted a gallery of striking photos of "Famous Literary Drunks & Addicts," including William S. Burroughs, Louisa May Alcott, Jack London, Anne Sexton, and more than two dozen others. Above, Jean Cocteau, who said, "To smoke opium is to get out of the train while it is still moving."
