How to Destroy Angels, the new musical project from Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor and his wife, Mariqueen Maandig, have just released their first song: the seven-minute-long atmospheric slow-burner "A Drowning." Listen at Pitchfork.
"A Drowning" is Reznor's first musical release since NIN's final live show in September. The track features pulsating computerized effects and an ominous piano melody, while ex-West Indian Girl singer Maandig pleads, "Please, anyone / I don't think I can save myself / I'm drowning here." It builds as oddly discordant horns and a haunting guitar solo kick in. British producer Alan Moulder, who has previously worked with Nine Inch Nails, as well as bands like the Jesus & Mary Chain, Depeche Mode, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Smashing Pumpkins, and Them Crooked Vultures, mixed the track.
Last week, NIN's publicist confirmed the group will release a "self-titled, six-track EP this summer," and Twenty Four Bit recently posted the EP's tracklist. See it below.
